How to use the disavow file

  1. Export your backlinks from Google Search Console, Ahrefs, or Semrush.
  2. Identify low-quality, spammy, or manipulative links.
  3. Paste the domains (recommended) or specific URLs above.
  4. Download disavow.txt and upload it in Google Search Console → Disavow Links Tool.

Domain vs URL disavow — which should I use?

  • Domain-level (domain:example.com) — disavows the entire domain and every subdomain. Use this in 90%+ of cases.
  • URL-level — disavows only the exact URL. Use only when a single page on an otherwise good site links to you badly.

When you should NOT use disavow

  • You have no manual action and no clear negative SEO attack.
  • The links are simply low-authority — Google usually ignores them.
  • You are not sure whether the links are harmful. Disavow is a last resort.
